Under items B.1.8, B.1.9 and B.1.11 of the 2nd meeting of the Senate of the Institute (IIT Palakkad) held on 17 Nov 2017, it is resolved that maximum of six credits of Professional Major Elective (PME) and three credits of General Category Elective ( GCE) courses may be earned through online courses and courses offered at other IITs and academic institutions similar in repute to IITs in India and abroad and recommends that for the above said purpose, the online portals, courses and institutions are to be approved by the senate (B.1.9) and the courses completed outside IIT Palakkad be considered for satisfying the credit requirements alone and not to be included for GPA/CGPA calculations (B.1.11).
IIT Madras Senate has approved BTech/DD students to do 21 credits (new) of elective courses through NPTEL online courses. These credits are to be transferred using a procedure similar to credit transfer from other institutions. Only credits will be transferred and not grades.
What is the formula for conversion of NPTEL credits tio IITM credits (new)?
One NPTEL credit will be converted to three IITM (new) credits.
Can the NPTEL course be studied during the semester?
Yes.
If so will it affect the maximum credit limit per semester?
The NPTEL credits are transferred only after completing an NPTEL course. Hence the NPTEL registered credits in a semester will not affect the maximum (60 +3 +3) per semester.
What is the process to obtain credit transfer?
After completion of NPTEL course and receiving the NPTEL certificate, the student has to claim credit transfer on workflow.
Procedure:
First the (E, H, P or S) category of the course must be approved by the concerned HoD (done offline on the copy of the NPTEL Certificate). The HoD approved copy of the NPTEL certificate has to be uploaded on work flow under general -> student ticket.
The rest will be done online.
Note:(i) ONLY B.Tech elective credits can be obtained from NPTEL. No core courses or DD/M.Tech level elective credits can be earned through NPTEL.
(ii) Only 9 out of 27 compulsory H category credits can be claimed. More than 9 H category credits, if earned through NPTEL, will be counted only towards 'free electives' .
